Enjoying December Days
December started about two weeks ago. New Year is on the way, and will
be soon here. We had snow a couple of times. Today there is nothing just
by the road side and by the side of walkways. Things have changed, I
think, because of global warming. We now don't have heaps of snow and
ice.
I remember windchill used to be in September and snow used
to start by November. From December to February used to be tough. People
used to become tired like it will never end.
I was in Ottawa
thirty years ago. Winter over there used to be really tough. Ice floats
on lake water even in March. Rideau Canal used to be changed into an ice
skating rink. I joined a couple of things to get out to pass my cold
days, long nights and short days.
I used to get a monthly bus
pass to move around. We have to find ways to make use of our time.
Complaining won't help anything out. Nothing changes, we have to change
our own self. Make plans according to the available circumstances.
I
joined Oxfam, Red Cross and so many other organizations to keep myself
going. My son was not married at that time so our house looked like an
empty nest. Just me and my son. He was busy with work and doing his
Masters. I also joined school, why not use time doing something positive
instead of being a couch potato.
It was February time, and my
teacher asked what month it is, then said that this is the month of
family disputes, separations and divorces. Long winter, cold days, snow
all around. No choice for people except to stay home. They start feeling
that there won't be any end of this tunnel. Depression starts to mess
things up. Family life is the first thing to get affected as both
parties are stuck at home.
My teacher was not making it up.
Quarter a century ago winter used to be tough. Cold gloomy days. Long
nights. It was hard to face here in Canada. Summer used to be mild and
short. I remember, I got my first pedestal fan in September 1992.
Due
to global warming things have changed so much everywhere around the
world. It is a different story now. I am walking, going to Coffee
House, no snow around on the walkway. It is a bit chilly, 11 C below
zero.
I am bundled up in layers with my winter coat, gloves, woolen cap
and scarf. It is fine, we know that we are living in Canada. We can
handle that. No worries, no complaints. Life is all good.
